The pricing playbook that built the last generation of SaaS companies does not fit AI products. Stripe’s research into the Forbes AI 50 makes that concrete: two-thirds of those companies use some form of usage-based pricing.

What the data shows

AI’s variable costs and unpredictable demand patterns are pushing leading companies away from flat subscription models. According to Stripe, these companies are iterating on pricing much faster than traditional SaaS businesses, prioritizing market share over ARR, and running multiple go-to-market strategies simultaneously rather than committing to a single motion.

The operator implication

If you are building an AI product and still anchoring your pricing model to a seat-based or flat-tier SaaS structure, you are working against the grain of how the market is moving. Usage-based models shift revenue risk but also reduce friction for early adoption, which matters when you are competing for mindshare before product-market fit is fully locked in.

The full Stripe analysis is worth the read if you are in the middle of a pricing decision or preparing for a fundraise where ARR definitions will come up.
