Speed is the pitch for AI-assisted development. Build faster, ship faster, move on. The problem, according to Search Engine Land contributor Donna Rougeau, is that speed has quietly swallowed the verification step.

Why This Matters for Solo Operators
If you’re using Cursor, Claude, or any AI coding assistant to build features, implement redirects, fix structured data, or push schema changes, you’re operating in exactly the environment Rougeau is describing. The AI generates output that satisfies the prompt. That’s not the same as output that satisfies the requirement.
For technical SEO specifically, the gap between “looks right” and “is right” shows up in places like canonical tags pointing to the wrong URLs, robots.txt changes that block crawlers you meant to allow, or structured data that validates in a linter but fails to render in search results. None of those failures are obvious from a code review. They require a verification step that AI won’t automatically add to its own workflow.

Rougeau’s argument isn’t that you should stop using AI to build or optimize. It’s that the verification layer can’t be skipped just because the generation layer got faster. Whatever your current QA process is for development and technical SEO, it needs to run after the AI finishes, not instead of it.
