AI search cut publisher ad supply by up to 40% in Q2 2026

Four stories from the week of 19 July 2026 that are quietly repricing how digital advertising works. Two involve numbers you should put in front of your next budget conversation. One has a hard deadline. One is a regulatory story that will take 18 months to land but affects everyone running search visibility campaigns.

AI search took 32–41% of publisher ad requests in Q2

Ozone, which tracks roughly 20 billion impressions across premium publishers including the Guardian, News UK, and the Wall Street Journal, reported that publisher ad request volumes fell 32–37% year on year in the US and 39–41% in the UK between April and June. The culprit is zero-click AI search cutting referral traffic before it reaches publisher pages.

Programmatic spend across Ozone’s combined US and UK cohort was down 30.6% year on year in the first half. The US dropped 44%. The UK fell only 14.3% because rising yields bridged part of the gap.

Prices are moving the other way. June eCPMs were up roughly 30% year on year in the UK and 7% in the US. Apps were the only channel to grow, with US spend up 23%.

If programmatic display is a meaningful line in your plan, premium open-web inventory is getting scarcer and more expensive at the same time. Testing publishers’ logged-in, app, and first-party data environments now is cheaper than waiting for the repricing to hit your next budget cycle.

ChatGPT phone leads convert at 49% — highest of any channel

Invoca’s 2026 benchmarks report, built from more than 70 million phone calls and 600 million minutes of conversation, found that calls referred by ChatGPT convert into sales leads at 49%. That’s roughly 10 percentage points above the cross-channel average and 6 points ahead of Google Business Profiles.

Volume is still very low, and ChatGPT is the only AI model producing measurable call volume at all. Invoca explicitly says to treat this as an early signal, not a reason to shift budget.

Two other numbers from the same dataset are worth a separate look: only 56% of calls to businesses get answered by a person, and 64% of businesses never ask the caller to buy or book. Those gaps exist regardless of where the call originated.

If phone leads matter to your business, configure your call tracking to tag AI referrals now. The people ringing after researching in ChatGPT are arriving close to a decision, and having data on that before your next budget conversation is worth more than the setup time.

⏱️ Google’s bid target deadline: 17 August

Google confirmed on 14 July that from 17 August, Demand Gen line items in Display and Video 360 using Target CPA, ROAS, or CPC will start delivering to the target advertisers actually set. The same change was already announced for Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns in Google Ads.

Google’s own example: if your target CPA is £10 but you’ve been achieving £5, costs will drift up toward £10 unless you reset the target to £5 before the deadline. Google will not adjust it for you.

A Bid Target Adjustment Tool has been live in accounts since 6 July. Smart Bidding takes around seven days to settle after a target change, which means the window for tidy testing before the 17 August cutoff is already shrinking. Pull every budget-limited campaign that beats its current target and either lock the real CPA in as the stated target or accept higher costs knowingly. Doing nothing guarantees the price rise.

Brussels is opening Android and Google Search data to AI rivals

The European Commission set out Digital Markets Act requirements on 16 July forcing Google to open 11 Android features to rival AI assistants, including voice activation similar to “hey Google.” Users will see the changes from July 2027.

Google must also share the data it collects to optimise its own search results with OpenAI and other AI chatbots that have search functions, anonymised and priced by a set formula, starting from January.

Google’s Kent Walker said the decisions “risk undermining vital privacy and security guardrails.” The EU’s tech chief said she hopes to see alternatives emerge to both Google Search and Gemini.

This is a regulation story, not a competition story, and the timeline is 18 months out. The practical implication for anyone running search visibility work: start building on the assumption that several AI assistants, not just Google’s, will be answering your customers’ questions before the end of 2027.
