Vibe coding defined: Karpathy’s term and what it actually means

Andrej Karpathy coined the term vibe coding in early 2025. The definition is deceptively simple: describe what you want, iterate on AI output until it looks right, and ship. No architecture upfront. No deep understanding of the internals.

The name is almost deliberately casual. Vibe. As if the whole thing is low stakes.

How the Narrative Got Here

The framing around AI-assisted development has shifted significantly with each new tool release. When GitHub Copilot launched in 2021, the pitch was AI as pair programmer. When ChatGPT arrived, it shifted to AI as junior developer. By the time Cursor, Windsurf, and Devin entered the picture, the goalposts had moved far enough that most people stopped noticing where they used to be.

What Vibe Coding Actually Describes

According to the DZone breakdown, vibe coding is not a programming technique in the traditional sense. It’s a workflow: prompt, review, adjust, ship. The cycle repeats until the output is close enough to acceptable. Architecture decisions and internal comprehension are optional, or at least deferred.

The operator implication is real. Teams and solo builders can ship faster using this approach, but the tradeoff is that the person doing the shipping may not fully understand what they shipped. That gap matters when something breaks in production.

If you’re a solopreneur or indie hacker using Cursor, Windsurf, or Claude to move fast on side projects, vibe coding is probably already part of your workflow whether you named it or not. Knowing what it is, and where its limits are, is more useful than either defending or dismissing it.

The term exists now. The tools that enable it are not going away. The question is how much internal comprehension you want to maintain as the AI layer takes on more of the implementation.
